CalPERS is the nation's largest pension fund, administering pension and other benefits for employees of the state, 26 counties, and more than 1,500 other political subdivisions, including school districts. The system comprises 14 funds, including 5 defined benefit plans, 4 defined contribution plans, a health care trust fund and a long-term care fund. The Public Employees Retirement Fund provides coverage for more than 99% of all CalPERS active members. The other DB plans are for legislators and judges.
